Excavator hire cost per day in Toowoomba: what the rate covers
For a small machine you run yourself, the published daily average for a 1 to 2 tonne mini excavator on dry hire is $350 to $380. That figure is before GST. It is a planning guide from iseekplant.com.au as at October 2026, and each local hire business sets its own rate.
Dry hire means the machine arrives without a driver and you operate it yourself. The day rate pays for the machine and its standard bucket. It does not pay for someone to do the digging, and it does not always include delivery.
A few post holes or a short trench along a fence line often suit this size. A big pad or a deep retaining wall cut usually needs something heavier, and that changes the price.
What does an operator add to excavator hire prices?
With an operator, hire is charged by the hour. A 1 to 2 tonne mini excavator on wet hire (machine plus driver) ran $145 to $165 per hour in Toowoomba, with a four hour minimum. A 5 to 6 tonne excavator on wet hire ran $170 to $195 per hour. Both figures come from iseekplant.com.au as at October 2026.
A short job still pays for the four hour minimum, so a small task is often better bundled with other digging on the same visit.
The bigger machine costs more per hour but can clear a lot more ground in that time, so a large pad may cost less overall than it first looks.
Float and travel charges, minimum hire and GST
The day or hourly rate is only part of the bill. A float is the truck and trailer that carries the machine to your block, and many hire businesses charge for it each way. A travel charge can apply when the job sits further out from the yard.
Minimum hire period is the shortest booking the business will take. It might be a set number of hours for wet hire or a full day for dry hire.
GST is the other line to watch. The dry hire figure above is before GST, so the amount on your invoice will be higher. Hourly and daily hire rates plus GST, with float and minimum hire, should all be spelled out before you book.
Do longer hires get a better rate?
Multi-day and weekly hires usually attract a better rate than a single day. A fence line, a drainage run and a pad cut done back to back can sit under one booking instead of three separate ones.
The saving is not a fixed percentage. Each local hire business decides its own discount, so the number you hear for a three day job in Newtown may differ from one for the same job in North Toowoomba.
There is a trade off. Paying for a machine that sits idle while you wait for a concrete pour or an inspection can cost more than two shorter hires.
Which size machine suits your job and your gate?
Size drives price more than anything else, so it pays to get it right. A 1 to 2 tonne mini fits down the side of most houses and through a standard gate, which suits backyard trenches, footings and post holes. A 5 to 6 tonne machine needs more room but digs deeper and faster.
Attachments change the job too. An auger drills post holes quickly, a tilt mud bucket grades and cleans drains, and a GP bucket handles general digging. These can be arranged with the machine, so footings and trenches get done in one visit.
If you dig a trench 1.5 metres deep or more as part of a business, the work area must be secured against unauthorised access so far as reasonably practicable. An operator on wet hire will know how to set the job up that way.
Tell us about the dig and get the right machine
Give the length and depth of the trench, what stands on the ground now, how the block falls and how wide the side access is. That is enough for a hire business to suggest the machine, wet or dry, and the rate.
Use the form to request a machine, and add your suburb and a phone number so the details of float, minimum hire and GST can be set out before you book.
